New Organic Food Story on organicfood-benefits.com
8th May, 2007 - Laura Hart
Over the past years, authentic hard-working organic producers have claimed that they are being unfairly competed against by commercial mass-producing rivals of organic food, who dance on the line of organic and commercial.
Recently, Australia’s NGO standards developing body began setting up new standards to sort out the issue.
The justification is, Australia consumers should truly know what they are paying for.
But Scott Kinnear from the group, Biological Farmers of Australia, says it’s only going to cause problems.
They claim it’ll be a huge step back for the industry and will simply encourage un-certified organic food produce.
The real negative impact is that they release a standard, which is voluntary, an organic standard that does not mandate and does not require authentication.
As far as the consumer is concerned, we will potentially see a flood of uncertified organic products bearing a very credible label claim on the packaging that says that these organic products have been produced according to Standards Australia organic standards.
Australia’s $400 million organic food industry is currently self-regulated, with around eight private organic certifying groups as well as many overseas organizations.
Each group uses a variety of an organic standard developed by the Australian Quarantine and Inspecting Service.
